LMS – what is it and what is its role in e-learning?

E-learning is implemented both in large corporations, which allocate significant funds to training processes, and in small companies using the Internet or other electronic media to support communication and contacts serving the exchange of knowledge.

Courses e-learning outside of the content contain a number of substantive and interactive multimedia elements, which are aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the use of e-training. There are a number of tools on the market for creating interactive, multimedia trainings involving participants in the education process.

The easiest way to organize remote education in a comprehensive way is to use educational platforms. The most adequate tools for conducting remote classes are the so-called LMS platform . These are online systems that enable the sharing of educational materials (including interactive ones), participant management or analysis of e-learning results. The LMS platform is a tool that allows for comprehensive management of the remote educational process .

Among the systems for creating e-learning we can distinguish the following classes:
• LMS – training management system,
• LCMS – training content management system,
• LCS – synchronous communication management system.

All three systems come in many forms and are often referred to as learning platforms.

LMS (Learning Management System) is a training management system that:
• allows you to create profiles of participants,
• facilitates the analysis of progress,
• helps with the management of teaching materials and participant service (calculates fees, informs about debt, etc.),
• enables administration and reporting.

The LMS platform provides single learner access to a variety of learning resources, administers training programs, and offers opportunities for human resource development. The LMS system may require the student, after completing the course, to undergo verification through a test / test of the acquired knowledge and to prepare a report on the training results and propose the next stage / s of the training. It allows you to organize online virtual classes and courses conducted by teachers / instructors.

From the end-user perspective, the LMS provides an efficient way to track individual skills and competences , simple methods for locating training activities and registering for courses.

From the platform administrator’s side – these systems manage access to on-line courses for which the user has been registered, as well as facilitate the introduction, tracking, management and reporting of training activities in the organization.

The technological unification of the content presented in different systems enables the free transfer of courses and training between platforms and the interaction between the training management system and e-learning.

LMS is not a uniform application. However, it is software proposed by most consortia involved in the process of implementing e-learning in companies. It is also worth mentioning that LMS platforms are certified by international organizations before they enter the market .

Remember that the implementation of an LMS system does not always have an economic justification . Nor is it necessary to take full advantage of the benefits of e-training.

LMS fulfills many important functions in the didactic process. Full use of the system of this class significantly simplifies and speeds up the management of the educational process .

Training management platforms should enable their users to perform all activities in a simple manner . Due to the specificity of distance learning, it is also important that the creators of LMS take into account the technological limitations related to the load on the Internet network. E-learning systems are a high-level, strategically important solution for planning, delivering and managing the learning process in an organization.

The target group of the LMS system is both the card and training department, as well as middle and senior management personnel, gaining the opportunity to obtain data for operational and strategic management of the organization.
